There’s basically no one who hasn’t heard about the Full Moon Parties on Koh Phangan. But we’re here to answer the real question: what do you do the rest of the time :-)?
Whether you’re planning to hit one of the parties—or you’re firmly on Team “nope”— Koh Phangan is an island that spoils everyone. And you feel it the second you arrive. Yes, it’ll be hard to peel yourself off that soft sand and even consider doing something today… but just in case that pineapple shake suddenly turns you into a motivated athlete, here are eight attractions that are absolutely worth getting up for.
1. Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park—an archipelago of 42 islands—shows off dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and pristine emerald water. Head out on a day trip to kayak through seriously pretty scenery, snorkel colorful coral reefs packed with marine life, or hike up to the viewpoint on Ko Mae Koh for jaw-dropping panoramic views. You *can* go privately, but most travelers book a guided day tour around the park.
What can you expect on the trip?
Kayaking: Explore hidden coves and spot vibrant marine life as you paddle through emerald water.
Snorkeling: Drop into an underwater world full of colorful fish and coral reefs. Choose tours that offer kid-friendly snorkel gear and life jackets.
Hiking: Climb to the top of Ko Mae Koh for stunning, wide-open views of the whole archipelago.
For families—pick a tour company that offers shorter, easier routes that work well with kids.
Lagoon exploring: Discover the hidden beauty of the Emerald Lagoon, a seriously wow-worthy natural wonder inside the park.
LOGISTICS:
Duration: Most tours run roughly 8:00–17:00, including hotel pickup and drop-off.
Cost: Prices depend on the operator, what’s included (lunch, snorkeling gear), and the boat type (big speedboat vs. longtail boat).
Providers: Many tour operators on Koh Phangan offer day trips to Mu Ko Ang Thong. Take a peek at this tour, for example…

2. Than Sadet National Park
Need a break from the buzz? Slip into the calm of Than Sadet National Park. Wander through thick rainforest, cool off under rushing waterfalls like Phaeng Waterfall, and find peaceful trails and hidden natural pools. The park also has a viewpoint with gorgeous views over the island’s west coast.
What you can do there:
Hiking: Explore a network of trails for different fitness levels. Traveling with little kids? Stick to the shorter, easier paths.
Waterfall time: Take a refreshing dip in the cool water at the base of Phaeng Waterfall—the park’s most popular waterfall.
The viewpoint: Hike up to the park’s viewpoint for sweeping panoramic views of Koh Phangan’s west coast.
Entrance fee: There’s a small entrance fee.
How to get there: The park is located on the island’s northwest coast.
The park by motorbike: You can also explore the park by motorbike for a more adventurous vibe (make sure all adults have valid licenses).
Guided tours: Consider a guided tour with experienced local guides who can share insights and help keep things safe—especially for families with young kids. Some tours may even include transportation and lunch.
Tips:
- Shoes and water…
- Bring bug spray and sunscreen. A rain poncho is also a smart move.
- Download an offline map of the park trails in case cell service is limited.
3. Khao Ra
Khao Ra is the highest point on Koh Phangan, reaching about 627 meters (around 2,057 feet). A popular thing to do is hike up to the summit. Some travelers call it “the hardest hike” on the island—but honestly, the difficulty depends on your fitness level and which route you choose.
Starting point: The most common starting point for the Khao Ra hike is Khao Ra Terrace, a viewpoint you can reach by motorbike or taxi. There’s usually an entrance fee of about 20 baht per person.
Trails: Several trails lead to the top, each with different difficulty levels.
The most popular route is a well-marked trail that’s generally considered moderately challenging. Expect a steady incline with a few steeper sections. Total distance (round trip) is about 3.8 km (around 2.4 miles).
Time: Plan on about 1.5 hours one way on the main trail—and ideally more. Add extra time for breaks, photos, and soaking in the views.
The view: Your reward is a breathtaking panoramic view of the island. On a clear day, you can see the east coast, nearby islands like Koh Tao and Koh Samui, and even the Thai mainland far off in the distance.
∴ Northern viewpoint: The main viewpoint gives an incredible look over the island’s north and Chaloklum Bay.
∴ Eastern viewpoint: Some hikers mention a big rock on the eastern side that offers an alternate angle. Getting there may take extra effort, so decide based on your comfort level.
More tips:
- Wear proper shoes: hiking shoes or sturdy boots are key for the uneven terrain.
- Bring lots of water.
- Sun protection: pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Mosquito repellent: recommended to avoid bites.
- Limited facilities: there are no shops or restaurants on the hike. Pack snacks and drinks if needed. Basic food and drink options
- may be available at the starting point (Khao Ra Terrace).
- Bring a towel and a change of shirt too. There are a few chances to splash around along the way, and it’d be a shame to skip them.. :-).
4. Wat Pho
A local temple focused on Thai massage—and it also has an herbal steam sauna, similar to Wat Pho on Koh Samui. It’s a super popular stop on the island..
Wellness focus: Wat Pho is great for anyone craving a little relaxation and reset.
Services: Traditional Thai massages by experienced therapists. They also offer an herbal sauna, a popular Thai wellness ritual (and sometimes it even has spiritual meaning).
Vibe: Expect a peaceful atmosphere with a big focus on rest and wellbeing.
Cost: Pricing for massages and sauna sessions can vary depending on the length and type of treatment. It’s best to contact them directly for the most up-to-date info.
Location: Near Baan Tai on Koh Phangan’s west coast.
Koh Phangan’s sunset spot: 420 Club (formerly 360 Bar)
Sunsets, chill vibes, and a panoramic little slice of heaven are waiting for you at Koh Phangan’s 420 Club—the new name for the famous 360 Bar. It’s an open-air, laid-back spot on a hill with unreal 360-degree views across the island. Sip something cold, let the mellow tunes do their thing, and watch the sky go full-on watercolor mode as the sun drops under the horizon.
What’s there?
Unforgettable sunsets: Watch fiery sunsets paint Koh Phangan’s sky in bold colors.
Relaxed atmosphere: Sink into comfy cushions and soak up the island’s most easygoing energy.
Panoramic views: Those 360-degree views are still the main event—letting you see the whole island spread out below.
Where: 420 Club is in the same location as 360 Bar, on the northeastern tip of Koh Phangan near Thong Lang Beach. For a scenic little adventure, grab a taxi or rent a scooter. Here’s a link to their Facebook page…
5. Thong Sala Night Market
Drop into the lively energy of Thong Sala Night Market—a colorful evening scene. Rows and rows of stalls overflow with all kinds of goods, snacks, and “okay I’ll try just one more” treats.
Shopping: You’ll find souvenirs like handmade textiles, local art, and the iconic elephant pants. And the street food? So good. From fragrant curries to fresh seafood skewers, it’s basically dinner and entertainment in one place. Live music adds to the buzz.
Location: Right in the heart of Thong Sala town—easy to reach on foot or by taxi/motorbike.
Hours: Usually open from around 5:00 PM until late evening (around midnight).

6. Two special beaches: Secret Beach and Bottle Beach
Secret Beach – a pretty secluded little paradise
Haad Son, also known as Secret Beach, totally earns the name—serving up a quiet, unspoiled escape from the crowds.
Picture soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and lush greenery framing the bay. It’s perfect for slowing down and enjoying that “nature is doing the most” kind of peace.
Location: On the island’s west coast, north of Thong Sala.
How to get there: Getting to Haad Son takes a bit of adventure. The most common way is by longtail boat from Chaloklum Bay on the island’s northeast coast. Alternatively, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, there’s a slightly challenging hike that’s accessible from Than Sadet National Park.
Limited facilities: Because it’s more remote, Haad Son has limited amenities. Pack essentials like snacks, drinks, and sun protection.
Extra tip: Check the tide times before you go—Secret Beach is more accessible at low tide.
Bottle Beach
Bottle Beach, also known as Haad Khuat, is a hidden gem known for its untouched beauty and calm vibe. Think soft white sand meeting turquoise water—basically a postcard that you can actually swim in.
Location: On the island’s northeast coast.
How to get there: You can reach it by motorbike via a small side road off the main coastal road between Haad Yao and Haad Chao Phao. There’s a parking area near the beach entrance. You can also access the beach through Haad Son Resort on the northern end. Brace yourself for a dramatic downhill…
Both Bottle Beach and Secret Beach are gorgeous hidden coves on Koh Phangan, but there are a few key differences:
Accessibility – Bottle Beach is harder to reach, less developed, and wilder. Secret Beach offers a better balance between relaxation and basic facilities—but it can get more crowded.
7. The observation deck at Bottle Beach
The observation deck at Bottle Beach serves up an incredible panoramic view of the beach and the surrounding bays. A must for Instagram people—and honestly, also for the “I don’t even use Instagram” crowd :-).
Breathtaking view: You’ll get a sweeping look at Bottle Beach’s bright white sand, turquoise water, and that lush green jungle backdrop. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of nearby islands.
It’s a viewpoint that really lets you appreciate the whole horseshoe-shaped bay and the dramatic cliffs framing the beach. Don’t expect a neat wooden platform—this is a natural rocky area that still makes it easy to take in the scene below.
How to get there:
A short hike: The viewpoint is accessible via a short walk from the beach itself. The path isn’t overly difficult, but it can include uneven ground and a bit of climbing. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
Part of the Haad Rin trail: The viewpoint sits along the early section of the Haad Rin hiking trail—a longer route that connects Bottle Beach to Haad Rin Beach on the other side of the island.
Safety: Be careful near the edge of the rock, especially with kids.

A must for nature + quiet lovers – Haad Than Sadet Beach – escape into the calm on Koh Phangan
Haad Than Sadet Beach stands out on Koh Phangan thanks to its secluded charm—and it’s the total opposite of the island’s famous Full Moon Party scene. Picture a beach cradled by tall coconut palms, dramatic rock formations framing turquoise water, and jungle whispers replacing the usual party bass.
What’s special about this beach?
A secluded paradise: Tucked into a bay at the entrance to Than Sadet National Park, this beach is far from the tourist crowds. Ideal if you’re looking for a peaceful escape to reconnect with nature.
Relatively deep water – The water gets deep fairly close to shore, which makes it great for swimming (not just a quick splash).
Natural beauty: The beach has a unique mix of textures—fine sand gives way to smooth river stones near the waterline. Huge granite boulders rise out of lush green hills, creating a dramatic backdrop for swimming and sunbathing. You might even spot a monitor lizard casually strolling along the beach…
A gateway to adventure: Haad Than Sadet Beach is a starting point for exploring Than Sadet National Park. Follow jungle trails leading to Than Sadet waterfalls—a refreshing treat for nature lovers.
Peaceful vibe: Unlike Koh Phangan’s more lively beaches, Haad Than Sadet feels calm and quiet. The sound of waves washing up and birds in the trees makes it genuinely relaxing.
Limited development: Because it’s remote, development here is minimal. You won’t find rows of resorts or loud bars. Instead, there are a few bungalows and restaurants with basic services—so you can truly unplug and enjoy the natural beauty.

8. Parties around the lunar cycle on different dates
Full Moon Parties: Imagine thousands of people dancing under moonlight, blazing fire shows, colorful buckets filled with soda and alcohol, and DJs keeping everyone moving until sunrise. These parties happen monthly on Haad Rin Beach, pulling in massive crowds and high-energy chaos. Expect higher prices, loud noise, and full sensory overload.
Half Moon Parties: Not as intense as the Full Moon Parties, these give you a more toned-down taste of the party scene. They happen halfway between full moons, draw a smaller crowd, and usually come with lower prices—perfect if you want something fun without the total frenzy. You’ll still get the music, the beachy vibe, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Black Moon Parties: Not what you’d assume… Black Moon Parties aren’t about darkness—they lean into spirituality and meditation. They take place during the new moon phase (when there’s no moon..), and you’ll find yoga sessions, healing ceremonies, and other introspective activities—offering a calm contrast to the island’s usual party scene. You can still enjoy fire shows and circus performances here, too.
